Edition 64: 3 Mother’s Day Gifts You Never Thought Of 🌷

“They decided to free themselves, dance into the wind, create a new language. And birds fluttered around them, writing “yes” into the sky.”

– Monique Duval (adapted)

Happy Sunday, Fam! 💕

Mornings in the sky are becoming the new thing. 😉 This week, we danced 23 stories high at the top of the William Vale in Brooklyn. It was pure magic. Combine that with a recent celebration of life inside Boston’s Fenway Park, and spring is alive and kicking (and dancing and swinging and smiling and all the things).💃

In other news, the Daybreaker CAMPUS tour continues! 🎉 Yesterday morning, we danced at Stanford University. Campus by campus, we are creating space for students to sweat, connect and party in a new way. Fam, it’s been incredible to watch. These young humans are the future and they have already shown us they have so much to offer. More to unfold… stay tuned!

All right y’all. Scroll down for our Mother’s Day Edition 💐 of Dancefloor Tales, unique gift ideas, things about Mom you probs didn’t know, our Sunday Playlist and upcoming community experiences. Lezzgo!

A MOTHER’S DAY TALE 💃

I am lucky enough to have the cutest, most down-to-dance Mom ever. Anytime I’m home, she jumps right into the random kitchen dance breaks I instigate. In 9th grade, instead of the stilettos the other girls were coveting, she found pink and black sneakers to match my homecoming dress, showing her support of my big plans to crash (and then proceed to own) the dance circle on my special night. Ever since I can remember, she’s let me dance in weird places and has always had my back. And I suppose I’ve learned a thing or two from her, too…

She taught me the Electric Slide. I taught her the Cupid Shuffle. She taught me to walk. I taught her how to dougie. 😝

I know she recognizes the freedom and joy that comes when we dance.

So it wasn’t a huge surprise when she showed her curiosity for this morning dance party thing I had been obsessed with.. and have been happily working for as of October ’16. #oneofthefam ❤️

Our first mother-daughter Daybreaker dance was a ’90s themed party in NYC, but nothing compared to our morning at Fenway together.

For the entire experience, I beamed in awe at the level of energy Mom had to offer. Mom is 68 years old (hi mom. I know you’re reading this; don’t get mad) and looks STUNNING for her age.😊 After a lung cancer scare, chemo and a couple of surgeries, she danced, non-stop the entire two hours. The adorable little cutie has only one lung and yet she shook her booty like the Little Engine That Could. She’s the epitome of positivity and only ever looks on the bright side. She is everyone’s cheerleader, and loves people fiercely. Simply put, I adore her.

Since then, she’s cracked open even more. We have an elderly neighbor who lives behind us and one day, instead of the usual wave goodbye after a visit, she stopped and gave the woman a hug. They’ve been friends for years, but hugging just wasn’t a thing that they did. Yet here, on this particular day that had been especially trying for our neighbor, mom literally remembered our Daybreaker ethos and took it as her cue to take the chance and embrace someone.

To all the mother figures out there (biological or otherwise), I want you to know that today at approximately 11am EST, I’ll be dancing in my apartment, and I’ll be dedicating it in honor of you. ❤️

With love & mischief,
// Katelyn

💝THE MOTHER’S DAY GIFT EDITION💝

Aside from the U.S., at least 94 other countries will celebrate Mother’s Day today. If you don’t have a gift yet, scramble not. Here are three super thoughtful things you can whip up before noon. ❤️ Love you, Mom!

1. ✈️ Bon Voyage, Mama. A survey of 2,000 baby boomers (for most of us, these are our parents) commissioned by British Airways, revealed that 1 out of 5 baby boomers regret not doing more traveling around the world. 60% of women in this generation never even got their passport, and more than a fifth of all those surveyed now believed that not taking vacations has had a negative effect on their health.

Solution: Be the firestarter that helps Mom dream up a mini getaway. Start a pinterest board with travel ideas, star Tiny Houses on Airbnb, start making packing lists. Help Mom make her trip a reality, and offer to be her travel bud. 👯

2. 🥊 Dukes Up, Mama Dukes. Did you know that a ton of baby boomer mamas didn’t even have the option to participate in gym class back in the day? It was a boys’ thang. Superset that with the fact that heart disease is in the top 10 medical concerns for baby boomers, and it’s looking like a sweat sesh might be in the stars rn. 💦

Solution: Enroll Mom in a boxing class or strength training session. According to the American Heart Association, exercising for 30 mins / day can help decrease the risk of getting heart disease. Strength training also builds up efficacy, something she may have missed if she was one of the many women who sat out gym class. Efficacy is the ability to set goals, hit them and feel accomplished because you’ve achieved some desired result (like getting your first pull up). It’s amazing for Mom’s self-esteem and overall baddassness.

3. 💕 Tell her WHY you love her. Our friends at Tribute say this all the time, and we just think it’s so incredibly meaningful. So often, we tell the people in our lives that we love them — but we never tell them why. Adding in “I love you because…” makes all the difference in actually making your sentiment 1,000 times more meaningful.

Solution: Add why you love Mom when you tell her today and add some actual gravitas to the statement.
